The following morning Charlie was putting on her overall, about to start work. There was no sign of Dot. As she pulled the overall on, she slid her hand inside the pocket and felt something. She took it out and it was the four pieces of Tedâs card. Surreptitiously glancing around to make sure there was no sign of an approaching Oberreichfueherin Dot, she placed the four pieces onto her workbench and arranged them like a jigsaw to read them, once again,
âTo the kind and honest lady. Thank you, for returning my wallet. Ted. xxâ
She glanced at the phone number and smiled, mischievously. Should she? Shouldnât she? Should she? No, it was none of her business. Besides, the card mightnât have belonged to Dot. The kind and honest lady? It certainly wasnât a description that hung comfortably on the Dot that she knew. Foul-mouthed, hostile bully â now that, she could have believed. She walked over and threw the pieces into the fresh crisp box, that sheâd replaced yesterday. As she looked up, Rick came walking into the area. He looked concerned about something. âWhatâs the matter?â she asked.
âHave you not heard about Dot?â
âWhat?â
âJoan rang me, last night. That bastard beat her up again, thatâs why sheâs not in.
He laid into her, good style. If Joan hadnât walked in, he mightâve killed her.â
Charlieâs stomach became twisted with shock and revulsion. She still hadnât conquered the knack of liking Dot, but no woman deserves to be abused, physically or mentally. She became silent.
âCharlieâ¦?â
âIâm going to visit her tonight,â she said, determinedly. âDo you have her address?â
Rick told her Dotâs address.
âDo you want to come with meâ¦?â
âNo⦠I canât⦠Not tonight.â
âIt wonât take long - just on the way home from work.â
âNo, I canât, honest. Iâve got tâbe somewhere, at five oâclock.â
âWhere?â she inquired, tactlessly.
Rick felt like saying to her, âMind your own bleedin business,â but, Rick being Rick, he said, âThe doctor.â
âAgainâ¦? Rick, whatâs wrong? Tell meâ¦â
âJust, tell Dot Iâm thinkin about her, an⦠whateverâ¦â He began to walk away.
âRick⦠RICKâ¦!â
